Biography

Must. Salma Khatun has completed her Master Degree (Master in Education) from the Victoria University of Manchester, UK, in 1994 with an ODA Scholarship. She has also been awarded the Diploma in Primary Health Care from the Queen Margaret University (former College), Edinburgh, UK. She has received Training of Trainer Course from the British Council provided by the UK. based Consultant in 1998. She has also participated in different training courses and study tour to UK, India, Thailand, and Malaysia organized by the WHO and DfID.

Before that she has completed her Graduation (Bachelor of Nursing Science) from The University, in the field of Public Health Nursing, in 1984; Diploma in Midwifery from Chittagong Nursing College (former Nursing Institute), in 1980 and Diploma in Nursing from Nursing Institute attached to SSMCH, Mitford, Dhaka, in 1979.

After receiving a Registration from the Bangladesh Nursing & Midwifery Council (former BNC) she entered into the government service as a Senior Staff Nurse in BSMMU (former IPGM&R), Dhaka in late 1980. After a long journey as a SSN, District Public Health Nurse, Instructor, Assistant Professor and Project Officer, she retired from the office of the Director-General of Nursing and Midwifery (DGNM), Dhaka, in mid-2017 as a Deputy Director Admin.

During her service, she worked as a National Nurse Consultant of the DfID funded SNES Project managed by the British Council, Dhaka for 7 years from 1995-1998 and 2001-2003. She performed her roles and responsibilities as an Instructor and Assistant professor of the College of Nursing, Mohakhali, Dhaka. She also worked closely with the Director, DNS, and Director General of DGNM to assist in:

  • developing the proposal of post creation for Nurses as well as Midwives;
  • modifying the recruitment rules for nurses and non-nurses under the DGNM;
  • developing various kinds of short-course training manuals;
  • providing different kinds of training programs to SSNs working for specialty hospitals nationwide;
  • conducting different kinds of training for personnel at the top-level, mid-level, and lower-level nursing management;
  • conducting leadership and teacher development programs as the national counterpart of different
  • International Consultants;
  • preparing master trainers; and
  • conducting divisional network meetings with the nurse managers, nurse administrators, and nurse-teachers.

Besides the above activities, she also performed the role of a focal point of CIDA to

  • establish the Nursing Institute Monitoring and Evaluation (NIME) visit program;
  • establish and run the platform named as the Bangladesh National Leadership Network (BNLN); and
  • develop few Nursing Institutes of four divisions as the Center for Excellence.

In addition to all, she worked with the committees formed by the BNMC in a different time to:

  • develop a Nursing Dictionary and a few Nursing related Bengali books focused on Problem-based Learning (PBL);
  • Develop the code of conduct for Nurses and Midwives;
  • Develop lesson plans;
  • Establish an accreditation system in nursing education;
  • Review and modify the SSN curriculum;
  • Develop B.Sc. in Nursing Curriculum;
  • Develop the Entry to Practice Competency for Nurses and Midwives of Bangladesh.

After her retirement she worked for Supreme Nursing College (former Institute), Tangail and Jahanara Nursing College, Sirajgonj as a Principal for a short duration. Later she joined the faculty of Ayat College of Nursing and Health Sciences, Dhaka as a professor and Project Director. Finally, she starts another journey with the faculty of Enam Nursing College, Savar, Dhaka on 1st January 2022.
